Tiny Tales for Modern Wayang
by East 15Inspired by the Javanese Wayang Kancil of Ki Ledjar Subroto, final year students from the East 15 Drama School (University of Essex) BA World Performance course perform their own interpretations of classic children's tales on the wayang screen.
Accompanied by traditional and modern compositions gamelan, the short tales are intense, bold and full of fun. The students studied the intricacies of wayang puppet making, then designed and created their own beautifully carved and painted puppets to bring their storytelling alive.
World Performance is a 3-year BA Hons course run by East 15 Acting School in partnership with the University of Essex.
As well as training students in traditional European acting styles, the course aims to expose students to a wide variety of acting, dance-drama, music, puppeteering, dance, and masked drama from across the globe.
Throughout the course students are encouraged to explore writing for theatre and film, performing, and directing.
Each student creates his or her own path in World Performance, making connections between all forms of art, graduating as competent performers, producers, musicians, dancers, directors, actors, educators and theatre makers.World performance is a playground, full of toys from distant lands!”
